Divine Thread

Sky Kim says of herself, “my religion is Oneness”.  She is referring to the common bond that unites all things in the universe, which is also a central theme in all of her work.

Sitting for endless hours at a time in a meditative stance painting, drawing or sculpting, she can be likened to a deity, pulling from a universal collective subconscious to create forms that are imbued with life. I have given Sky the moniker Clotho, after one of the three Moira, or Fates from ancient Greek mythology.  According to the myth, Clotho spins the thread of life, Lachesis measures it and Atropos cuts it. They are eternally committed to this process. In her art, Sky, too, spins that thread.

Sky Kim’s forms are immediately recognizable, in the manner that a Rorschach blot might be. They take on the identities of sea creatures, plants, cellular organisms, or even celestial bodies. Yet, they are not copied from any particular imagery. Instead, the artist builds them one minuscule cell at a time, allowing each form to grow organically and to dictate its own outcome. As her hand gives it life, our collective subconscious makes it real to us.

The realness of Sky’s forms is also a testament to her immense technical skill. Painted in watercolor with the fine brush stroke of a miniaturist, her large works on paper and long scrolls appear sculptural, almost photorealistic. Her drawings and small polymer-clay sculptures are executed in that same precise vein. In her talent lies a rare combination of vision, spirituality and virtuosity with which she is able to spin the Divine Thread that is our common bond.
